Clean install over Win 98SE

Hi
I just got my Windows XP full OEM version, bought with Qualifying Hardware
which I plan to use on my upgraded machine as a "Clean Install", the
machine is currently running Win 98se, but I don't mind getting rid of all
old files on the HD and starting with a fresh slate.
The XP Readme file on the cd-rom says that I can let it either autoplay or
type d:\setup.exe UNDER MY EXISTING 98SE OS, and just following
instructions on the screen.
I had been told that it would be best if I changed the boot order in BIOS
to boot thru the CD drive and would like to know if just using the simpler
route, as detailed above, would work just as well as if I altered the BIOS
to change the boot order.
In other words, will running XP setup under 98SE allow me to format the HD
and do a clean install???
thanks in advance
dg

You cannot run the XP setup program under 98SE and format the hard drive
that 98SE is running on. To do a clean install you boot from the XP cd and
follow the prompts to format the old 98SE disk. You would obviously have to
backup whatever data you may want to keep and reinstall all your programs.

Running it under the Win98 system may result in it refusing because
there is already a system there, and will probably result in it using
the partition over again as FAT 32, rather than giving you the chance to
use NTFS - which I would want in a clean install. So I would do the
boot of the CD. On entering Setup, when it asks about where, hit ESC
and delete the present partition and make a new one, to be formatted at
the next stage. You can take the opportunity to adjust the partition
size should you wish
