Classic menu to XP style with regkey

Hello All,

I have many PCs with XP SP2 installed. Due to history there are no
right
mouse button. The start menue is complete empty except the point
"Programs".
If you double klick this menue point the explorer appears. This
behavior
has to be switched off.

Till now we could find out that we can execute a regkey to do this.
But
this key only will work in the XP mode. Unfortunately the PCs are
configured in the classic mode.

Due to the strong restrictions the switching has to be performed with
a regkey. And it is not possible to configure in a "normal mode".

Has anyone a regkey to do this or another solution?

Thank's in advance.

Regards

I am finding it very difficult to understand the language used in your post,
by the way. What do 'there are no right mouse button' and 'double klick
this menue point the explorer appears' mean? Did you mean to say:

1). Right clicking the mouse produces nothing.

and...

2). All there is in the Start Menu is the item "Programs" and
double-clicking on this produces explorer.

If so, then there are two problems I can see. One is the Start Menu is
empty or deleted, or, the registry entry for "Start Menu" location has gone.
Double clicking on the programs folder produces explorer on any machine, it
is normal for this to happen. When you do this you will be in the
"Programs" folder of the "Start Menu".

The other problem sounds like the registry entry for the right-click mouse
context menu in explorer.

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoTrayContextMenu"=dword:00000001

But this only disables the right-click on the "Start Button" itself.
Without more clarification of what the symptoms are I just can't tell. Have
you tried "System Restore" for starters?

Sorry, I'm german and bad in the englisch language. I will do my best.

When you click "Start" the popup menue appears. Now, when you
doubleclick at the entry "Programs" a windows explorer window appears:

c:\documents and settings\<user>\startmenü\programs

And this behavior may not be.

The right mouse button is completly disabled, so that the user can't
change anything with this function.

A collegue of mine find all regkeys which are necessary to switch this
"doubleclick behavior" off.

But this works only when the startmenue is in "XP-Style" and not the
classic menue.

As I wrote, due to the installation and configuration in the past we
have the classic menue.

Due to ristrictions we have to copy the appropriate regkeys to the
desktop on all clients and execute them to configure the clients in
the right way. The main problem is, that we don't can do the
configuration in a "normal" way.

I apologize mine in advance for my bad englisch and if you don't
understand anything don't hasitate to ask for that.

Best regards

Hi Al,
I'm still a bit in the dark here. It is normal to get explorer
starting in the programs folder of the start menu if you double-click on it.
You are not really supposed to double-click on anything in the start menu as
it all works on a single 'point-and-click' basis. If there's nothing in the
'Programs' or 'All Programs' bit on 'Start Menu' then that is because there
are no shortcuts in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Start
Menu\Programs\...
Right-clicking in the start-menu CAN be disabled with a registry setting
but I didn't think it was possible to disable it across the whole operating
system?! I still need a bit more clarification, take is slowly.

Hello Tim,

we could prepare a test system (environment like the system at the
customer in Denmark) in the way that we can disable all functions for
this user and the links in the startup folder are still working. This
we could only do in the mode "XP startmenue" (the menue you have after
a standard installation).

When the PC starts over you can't see anything. When you click at
the start button the popup menue appears but it is empty and the user
can't click anything (neither single click nor double click is
working).

The application which is located in the startup folder starts
correctly.

Unfortunatetly the existing installation are configured as "classic
startmenue". To change this I'm searching for a regkey which change
the users start menue in the XP startmenue. We have to copy this
regkey to the desktop and doubleclick it and that has to be all.

I've tried some (recommended from other users) but no one did the
change we need.

I was in Denmark and have seen this effect. You get a explorer windows
which has the same rights like the appropriate user namly nothing. The
technican at site agreed with me that this is no problem but the
chiefs call for to stop this behavior.

Thanks for your help and I wish a nice Easter.

Best regards

InstallRite may be of help. If you can find a way to revert the changes on
one computer, this will tell you what alterations are needed, and/or make a
rollout-file to transfer the changes to other computers.

Other point is that the restrictions may have been set by way of a Policy.

In which case the policy will continue to over-ride any changes to the
registry until it is revoked. Therefore I suggest you check for the existence
of local or domain policies first.
