Claria/Gator Being Let In???

J

Jeff D.

I can't believe that I keep reading how this new "Anti-
Spyware" program of Microsoft's is going to allow Claria
(formerly known as Gator) to infest systems. I heard
about Microsoft wanting to buy Claria...now THIS??

I guess spyware isn't spyware if Microsoft can make some
money off of it. Yikes...this is bad news.

Deleting MS Anti-(unless you pay us)-Spyware TODAY!

Hi

Well, Mr Ballmer wants more aggresive admarketing
from MSN...........he will probably
call it "friendly spyware" with a beutiful EULA
and filled with goodies! Maybe he presents this
with his famous "monkey dance" ?

Take a look at Counterspy, $20 and the same
engine and definitions except Claria ;)

Its still BETA and things can change by beta 2. I don't agree with its
status in MSAS either and I hope Microsoft listens and put its customers
first and consider Claria products a threat, because they are.

So Counterspy is the same as MSAS, even the same bugs, so I don t want
to pay.
After uninstall Counterspy I had to repair MSAS again, it was very damaged!!

Well, MS cannot remove Claria from definitions,
remember Pestpatrol and Lavasoft about WhenU,
the only way to come out with this is to flag it with
"Ignore". We have a lot of users which are not well
informed about facts about Claria, so they trust MS
judgement about Claria to ignore it.

So this is saving MS face for a while but this will
hunt MS for long time, it will be articles in every
PC mag and also in other press and all well informed
people will laugh at this fact and NOT recommend MSAS.

Hello Plun,

must change Language again to get the PM time input for scanning!!

I was thinking that MS bought the program and now I see the same program
under a other name and a little bit other colors in the window!
And asking money for it!
So how is this possible?
You know more on this?

Before Microsoft purchased Giant, Giant had sold a version of its product,
including support through July 2007, to Sunbelt. Microsoft now carries that
support obligation, and will be providing definitions to Sunbelt through
that contract period.

The current beta product is indeed very similar to Sunbelt's product. This
will change with beta2, I suspect.

And how long before Microsoft AntiSpyware is set to simply
not detect Claria Adware at all?

Sure it may be set to Ignore now but I see that going away
when Mr. Ballmer brings Adware into the Core OS like the
Spyglass Web Browser was. What a wonderful adventure
Spyglass/Internet Explorer has been.

It's $10 in following years. Plus, you can get it for two computers for $30
the first year and I assume probably $20 or less for two computers the
following years. I'm not sure. I'll find out.

This problem will be fixed in the soon to be released 1.5 version of
CounterSpy..
Here's the answer from Phil Owens, Product Manager, Sunbelt Software posted
as a sticky in the CounterSpy official forum at Castlecops.

Here is what we know:

If you have both Microsoft AntiSpyware and CounterSpy installed all should
run well. We have tested this and they seem to play nicely together when
installed

However if you uninstall either one of the products the other seems to
break.

Scenario 1:
1. Both CounterSpy and Microsoft AntiSpyware installed
2. Uninstall CounterSpy
3. Microsoft's gcasDTServ.dll pegs CPU at 100% and will not end from the
task manager.

Workaround:
1. Boot Windows into Safe Mode
2. Launch msconfig and uncheck gcasServ.exe and any other gc*.exe in the
startup tab then restart. (If you are not running a version of Windows that
has msconfig you can delete the registry entry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\gcasServ)
3. From Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs click on Microsoft
AntiSpyware and then click Change
4. In the installer click Update and follow the rest
5. Launch msconfig and check all the unchecked gcas*.exe files (Confirm that
gcasServ was added back to the registry at the location above)
6. Reboot
7. All should be better

Scenario 2:
1. Both CounterSpy and Microsoft AntiSpyware installed
2. Uninstall Microsoft AntiSpyware
3. When CounterSpy is launched and an error message is displayed and will
not launch.

Workaround:
1. From the Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs click on CounterSpy
2. Click the Change Button
3. In the installer click Update and follow the rest
4. Reboot
5. All should be better

This will be fixed in version 1.5. Before you all ask . It is currently in
development and should not take us more then a couple months to release.

Thanks,
Phil Owens
