choppy playback and 90+ processor useage after 3-5 songs

Hey all,
recently, 5 days at most, I started having playback problems with media
player. After 3-5 songs play out from a playlist the sound becomes choppy,
took me a few minutes to realize something was putting a major strain on the
cpu while playing back. Tried everything I know to fix it, but the load in
the task manager performance tab shows 90 or more, with media player being
the process with outrageous loads on the cpu. Whats happening to my system
now?? It's only 77 days out of the box.

I forgot to add that I am using XP and Windows Media player 10 and 11 beta
both have this mysterious symptom.

As far as I can surmise, you are running WMP10 and WMP11 (beta).
When you activate either one, all codecs installed are activated. A
codec is coder/decoder, thus all your codecs are on twice, utilizing much
of your system resources. Either stick with just WMP11 (beta) or
roll back to using WMP10. See below for more info:

Hi and thanks for your prompt reply.

I am not actually running both at the same time, nor is one or the other
installed on the machine at any given time. Its one or the other only.
The other day I upgraded to WMP11 Beta, I was having this issue prior to my
recent installation of wmp11.

It doesn't make any difference "running one or the other", you still
activate ALL codecs for both WMPs at the same time. You may also
have the Real Player activated. Go here to disable that also.
Start>Run>type MSCONFIG and click OK>click the Startup tab.
Go down the list and uncheck RealPlay>click Apply>Close>reboot.

Thank you again for your reply.

I have taken all of your advice, was hoping to find real player while in
msconfig but it wasn't in the list at all. Rolled back to from WMP 11 to 10
again, that went smooth. Decided not to reinstall / activate the version 10,
decided to just go ahead and start getting comfortable with Media Center,
everything was going great until around the fourth or fifth song and the
processesor spiked in the 90's again, and the media center crashed, lost all
control, had to task manager, but eventually ended up having to push the
power button to shut down. Contacted Dell tonight via chat, that went all of
2 minutes and once again get booted from that chat session. This I am used
to. Any other suggestions? Oh! yeah, I also restored back to the original
date when I opened it up, that didn't help either. Let me know what you
think.

It looks like you have a more serious problem, maybe in the soundcard.
Your PC is still under warranty, suggest you contact Dell and have them
run you thru an online test.

I forgot to add to run your own online test before calling Dell.
Go to: Start>Help and Support>in the Search block type Sound.
There you can troubleshoot your sound system.
