Chkdsk error message

When ChkDsk tries to run, I get an error message "Cannot open volume for
direct access". There is a knowledge base article on this message (823439)
that says that Microsort has confirmed that this is a problem and is
researching it. However, this article is dated 8/14/03.

Is there any new information of how to eliminate this error.

Thanks.

Did you recently install ZoneAlarm 5? If so, that's why. Go back
to ZA 4.5.

I did recently upgrade ZA to v5 but I think that was long before this
problem started. What I was doing was playing around with SpamBayes but it
doesn't seem ready for prime time. After I uninstalled it, the problem
start.

I don't know what I did, but the problem seems to have gone away even though
I still have ZA v5. I booted to safe mode and that seemed to do it. I will
keep your advice in mind if the problem appears again.

Thanks for your help.

It only arises when something goes wrong so that CHKDSK gets set to run
at Startup. At that point the trouble with ZA kicks in. You need to go
back to the earlier ZA, then the CHKDSK will get in to do its stuff
