Check Disk

I have XP Home and have never had any trouble running check disk. However
Yesterday I tried and when I clicked ok to run on the restart it just froze
up. I had to unplug the computer and tried again with the same result. so
after I unplugged again I did it all again in safe mode and then restarted
the computer and it worked fine. I just tried it again today in normal mode
and it just froze up again. I do not have sp2 installed, I did have the free
version of zone alarm but uninstalled it a while back and have ran check disk
since without any problem. Ive run my virus scan / norton (ok) Ive ran search
and destroy (ok) defrag (ok) disk clean up (ok). Can anybody tell me what
happened and how to fix it?
Thanks

Suggestions and Checkpoints:

Go to Start/Run/CMD and type in: fsutil dirty query c:
(Modify the drive letter accordingly)

If it comes back as dirty, it hasn't cleared. For more information go to
Start/Run/CMD and type in: CHKNTFS /?

Option: From a command prompt type chkntfs /D and then reboot, a chkdsk
should run but not again on next boot.

This edit does not work for all users, circumstances depending:

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Chkdsk Runs Each Time That You Start Computer

Checkpoint:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Highlight the Winlogon file.

In the list look for "SFCScan", this should be set to (0) if it is set to
(1) the scan will happen at every boot.

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

Look for the REG_MULTI_SZ value with the following name: BootExecute. This
value contains commands that will be executed at startup. The default value
is: autocheck autochk *

After scheduling one or more chkdsks, the entry will contain one or more
autochk lines. Delete each of these lines and put the default one in place.

If you always want a check to be performed at startup, change the value to:
autocheck autochk /f *

If you don't want any checks to be performed, delete all autocheck entries.

Last checkpoint: Modify as needed:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComp
uter\cleanuppath
Registry entry should read: %SystemRoot%\system32\cleanmgr.exe /D %c

Thank you kelly, I'm not real good on the computer but I did the first thing
you mentioned start/run/cmd and typed in fsutil dirty query c: It came back
saying Not Dirty. I then clicked on the second tab chkdsk runs each time that
you start the computer but, stopped. I do not want it to do a check every
time I start the computer. I just want it to work like it used to. I clicked
on my computer, right click on local disk C, click on properties, click on
tools, and click check now. I click both options. then OK, it then said it
couldnt run then but would on the next restart. I would click ok then restart
the computer. The problem now is after clicking both chkdsk options it just
freezes up. I just want it back to the way it was. Perhaps your info would
work Im just afraid to make it start doing a chkdsk every time I start the
computer and not being able to make it stop doing it every time. I'm still
working on it and appreciate all your info.
Thanks
