Changing Telephone Number Format from (xxx) xxx-xxxx to xxx-xxx-xx

How does one change the format from the standard parentheses-initial format
that comes with Outlook to a different format, such as xxx-xxx-xxxx? The
standard format takes up more room and often causes problems while the x/dash
format is less likely to do so. But in Tools, Options, and Custom, I have
seen no possibility of changing the appearance of the automatically generated
(xxx) xxx-xxxx. Does anyone know of a way to fix this problem?

For obvious reasons, masking of phone numbers in Outlook is hard coded. You
can't change it.
