Changing Node Type

Guest

Is it possible to change the Node Type of a NIC card?
The laptop on the network, ipconfig/all, says it's HYBRID.
The desktopm with XP PRO says UNKNOWN. This used to have 2000 and was
DYNAMIC.
Now, I need the ADSL modem on for the two machines to communicate with each
other. The old way, 2000, I didn't.
As near as I can tell, the Node Type might be the reason why.

I went to the link and also saw a similar post with a reply from PChuck.
Both gave similar info. The ONLY problem is this: My registry does not,
that is correct - not, have the "EnableProxy" key.

I do have the following:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters

KEY NAME VALUE
(Default) (value not set)
BcastNameQueryCount 0x00000003 (3)
BcastQueryTimeout 0x000002ee (750)
CasheTimeout 0x000927c0 (600000)
NameServerPort 0x00000089 (137)
NameSrvQueryCount 0x00000003 (3)
NamesrvQueryTimeout 0x000005dc (1500)
NbProvider _tcp
SessionKeepAlive 0x0036ee80 (3600000)
Size/Small/Medium/Large 0x00000001 (1)
TransportBindName \Device\

Any additional help would be appreciated.
Thanks MNM

If you have neither a DHCPNodeType nor NodeType value, you should be getting
Unknown in "ipconfig /all". This in itself should not cause problems - your
computer will use Hybrid resolution.

How about you post the complete "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose your problem properly. Read this article, and
linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Give me a few days to get the time to run the programs and gather the info.

Thanks a whole bunch Chuck.

I feel I must reiterate an important point. The two computers can only
communucate when the ADSL modem is powered up. Everything, computers and
modem, is connected to the hub.

Also, under the network setup wizard I chose OTHER in the "Select Connection
Method" screen. On the next I chose, "This computer connects to the Internet
directly or through a network hub..." This was done on both machines.

I do remember during the intall of XP Pro (desktop w/ Unknown Node Type) I
beleive I answered NO to a question relateing to DHCP. And, some networking
compocomponents are not intsalled as well.

What make and model modem are we talking about?

Details might be very useful here. The question that you answered, and the
missing network components, are very likely at least part of the problem. The
diagnostics that I requested will provide some good clues.

There are two states in which I gathered the information. State 1 is with
the ADSL unpowered, and state 2 with it powered up. I also included a ping
test for each state since there was something very interesting I found in
State 1, the laptop could ping the desktop but not vice versa.

The desktop is running XP Pro Ver 2002, SP 2 (English Lang. OS)
The laptop is running XP Home Ver 2002, SP2 (Japanese Lang. OS)
The ADSL modem is an NEC- Aterm DR207C (Japanese Market)

OK, Mark,

First, node types Hybrid and Unknown are fine - without a WINS server
configured, Unknown is treated as Hybrid.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html#Unknown

Next, the Aterm DR207C is a combo ADSL modem / NAT router. Start by re running
the network setup wizard, on both computers, and choose:
This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my network or
through a residential gateway.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html#NATClient>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html#NATClient
The Aterm is a residential gateway. It provides the default gateway, DNS
server, and DHCP server.

Next, let's discuss tests I.A.1-3 / I.B.1-3. If the computers are connected
thru the Aterm, and you power the Aterm down, then neither DHCP nor LAN should

If M is the master browser, then R should be expected to see browsing as NOT
active on the domain.

And concentrate on the two computers while powered up and connected. If M has
an IP address of 192.168.0.2, and R has one of 192.168.0.3, why did you ping M

those addresses? Did you take the "ipconfig /all" and "ping x" at the same

OS)

What's weird that I notice: W/O the ADSL, State 1, Browsing is active on
the Desktop (M) But the laptop shows it as inactive. Then there's the PING
problem in this state.
With the ADSL, the registry could not ba accessed, error 5 from M and error
53 from R (laptop). From your web pages, this is about normal though.

OK, Mark,

First, node types Hybrid and Unknown are fine - without a WINS server
configured, Unknown is treated as Hybrid.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html#Unknown>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html#Unknown

Next, the Aterm DR207C is a combo ADSL modem / NAT router.
1) Start by doing the diagnostics described far below.
2) Then, re run the network setup wizard, on both computers, and choose:
This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my network or
through a residential gateway.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html#NATClient>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html#NATClient
The Aterm is a residential gateway. It provides the default gateway, DNS
server, and DHCP server.
3) Finally, do steps 5 - 7 of the diagnostics again (ie rerun the tests
themselves).

Next, let's discuss tests I.A.1-3 / I.B.1-3. If the computers are connected
thru the Aterm, and you power the Aterm down, then neither DHCP nor LAN should
be available. APIPA addresses, and connectivity loss, is normal in this case.
If M is the master browser, then R should be expected to see browsing as NOT
active on the domain.

And concentrate on the two computers while powered up and connected. If M has
an IP address of 192.168.0.2, and R has one of 192.168.0.3, why did you ping M
as 192.168.0.5, and ping R as 192.168.0.6? Worse yet, why did they respond to
those addresses? Did you take the "ipconfig /all" and "ping x" at the same
time?

Finally, do some more diagnostic work. You'll need to follow the instructions
in this article with extreme precision. Follow the links in the article itself.

7) When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cpsserv.txt, first check Format and

"Did you take the "ipconfig /all" and "ping x" at the same time?"

I don't think I did them in the same session. I did check to make sure the
IP addresses were matching w/ ZoneAlarm before the ping.

{Now I know I can set a range to make life easier. I feared some else might
hack into the network through one of the other addresses.}

[SNIP]
"And concentrate on the two computers while powered up and connected."

They communicate and share files/printers just fine when the ADSL is powered
up. Since starting down this path, I wonder if the time and effort are worth
it. I wanted to have the two computers communicate with out the ADSL just as
before (Desktop had Windows 2000 Pro). I think that XP, regardless of the
flavor, will not let this happen. I reouted the ADSL power adapter to the
power strip to make life easier. Now, it powers up with everything else.

So Chuck, Do you think I should be happy with what I have (live with just
having the ADSL running with everything else)?

"Did you take the "ipconfig /all" and "ping x" at the same time?"

I don't think I did them in the same session. I did check to make sure the
IP addresses were matching w/ ZoneAlarm before the ping.

{Now I know I can set a range to make life easier. I feared some else might
hack into the network through one of the other addresses.}

Mark

Mark,

I have to admit, I'm a bit curious about what you had earlier, when they would
communicate without the modem being powered up. It's pretty basic - if you have
computers connected thru a powered hub (switch / NAT router), and the power is
cut, you're not going to have any communication. In fact, one of the advantages
of using a hub is supposed to be a central point where you can terminate all
communication, as desired, without having to spend time unplugging cables. Just
cut the power.

I think you should accept reality. Communication requires electricity. If you
have communication, be thankful.

Everything is running through a powered hub; it's connected to the power
strip. It's just that when the ADSL is not powered but connected to the
powered hub (never tried disconnecting the LAN from the ADSL) that the two
cannot communicate. When W2k was on the desktop, Node Type: Broadcast, I
didn't have this problem. The hub was powered but the ADSL wasn't, and the
computers communicated.

XP Pro on the desktop won't act the same. I have to keep the ADSL powered
up for communitation to occur.
