Network 2 XP machines - isn't it supposed to be easy? :)

T

Terry

I want to network (share files) between my work laptop
(part of a domain. as defined my company's network admin
folks, node type 'hybrid', IP address 192.168.1.101) with
my home desktop (part of a workgroup, node
type 'unknown', IP address 192.168.1.100). I can't seem
to find either computer on the other's Network Places.
Windows Help files don't address what would seem to be a
common question. Help?!?!

For additional background, Both computers run XP Pro.
Laptop is connected to internet via 802.11g Linksys Wifi
Card (through WAN connected to Router connected to Cable
Modem). Desktop is connected to internet via ethernet
card (through Cat5 connected directly to Router connected
to same Cable Modem).

Appreciate any help,
Terry

The first question I always ask is if you can ping. if not, compare ipconfig
/all or post it here.

Robert,

My desktop (192.168.1.100) can ping my laptop
(192.168.1.101). My laptop can't ping my desktop.

Next step?

Thanks for your help,
Terry

Ah! I can't help, I'm afraid, but I have a similar problem. One machine (10.1.10.4), which is the ICS machine, can ping the other machine (10.1.10.3), but not vice versa. Subnet masks are both 255.255.255.0.

make sure not firewall running on the lan connection. also you may want to
change the node type to hybrid.

Firewall is not running on either machine.

How do I change the node type? Couldn't find anything on
it in the help files.

Thanks
