Changing Folder views, moving Taskbar, etc.

Does anyone know the mechanism that prevents saving of Taskbar position,
Folder display options, etc? For example, I can set a folder to display
image thumbnails, but the choice is not remembered next time the folder is
opened. Similarly, if I change the Taskbar location, it will revert next
time XP is started.

I believe there is a Registry key that does this, but I can't seem to find
it. Any ideas?

If you want system to remember your folder view go to:
Windows Explorer-->Tools-->Folder Options-->View-->Apply to all folders.
