Memorize view settings per folder?

M

Michael Moser

How can one convince XP to memorize the view settings (i.e. icon / list
/ thumbnails / etc.) on a per folder basis?

There are different folders that require different settings, but XP
keeps showing me everything as detailed list (while this is my preferred
default, it is definitely not the optimum for *all* folders). And -
yes - I *DO* have the "Remember each folder's view settings" in Folder
Options => View-tab set, but that's obviously ignored, since after
changing this and later reopening the folder, it's again in details
mode.

For many months I too have been trying to find the answer to that. But
I'm reluctantly coming to the conclusion that it's impossible. And
that Microsoft have been unable to implement such an important
facility. Or are indifferent to the issue.

Meanwhile, I waste a heck of a lot of time changing particular folders
from Detail to Thumbnail and vice versa.

I meant to add also that I need this customization not only for
Explore/My Computer folders but for File Open & File Save As browsing
too.

Just a idea that came to my mind: maybe I once did a Tools => Folder
Options => "Apply to all folders" (namely when I defined "Details view"
as default). And maybe XP memorizes this ever since.

So, what happens if I click "Reset All Folders"? Since I have so many
bad experiences with MS SW using such global settings I am rather
reluctant to try this. Can that ruin my system or will it simply
re-allow individual folder settings?

I haven't responded because I can't relocate the info you need. But
maybe this will help you find it. The "memory" for how many folders XP
can remember settings for is rather low and can be adjusted with a
registry tweak. Perhaps this will trip someone's memory that has the
article/reference to it.

Found some info in google that indicates that yes, its a limit of the OS
as to how many directories it remembers.
If you wish, I googled "remember folder settings".
But one page suggests MS TweakUI program or this registry tweak.

<quote>
XP's Service Pack 2 changed the default from the original 400 remembered
folders to 5000. (Took them long enough to fix that problem!) Until they
made the fix, you could make the change in the registry by modifying
these two entries:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam
Creating a DWORD called BagMRU Size for each of those registry keys and
assigning it a decimal value of 5000 would fix the folder settings bug.
<quote>

Give it a try at your own risk.

You can also change it using TweakUI > Explorer > Customizations. Mine
is set to 5,000.

But that doesn't solve either of the problems here.

1. Folders don't consistently open in a My Computer window in the same
view mode as previously.

2. File Open and File Save As views are not consistently the same as
a) Previously
b) The corresponding My Computer folder view

There's a script available from this web site that you might find helpful.

How so? Those sound just like the symptoms I had years ago. Folders it
remembered worked OK sometimes, not at others if someting pushed them
along in the buffer & so forth I guess; it's been a long time. It
wasn't exactly a FIFO or a FILO organization, but interspersed itself
somehow on the buffer. MS had a KB article on it, but I still can't
seem to locat it.

Just curious,

Use this VBScript to set your folder views:

Folder View Master by MS-MVP Keith Miller (no homepage anymore)
http://mysite.verizon.net/res18hr7/FVM3.zip or
http://members.home.nl/alsdewiedeweerga/Scripts/FVM3/FVM3.rar

Just follow its directions. If you want to master folder views too, just ask.

Terry,
TweakUI v2.10 for XP is broken. It incorrectly operates on
'Bag MRU Size' instead of 'BagMRU Size'. Edit the registry another way.

Thanks. Just checked and see that both keys contain *both* entries,
each set to 5000. Is 'Bag MRU Size' redundant?

Terry,
Yes, 'Bag MRU Size' is redundant.
