You MAY be mixing apples and oranges.

First - if you go to "docs & sets" and right click and see a
check on Read Only; IS that "check mark" dark black on a white
background in that box or is it a "grey" color?

To make sure you can check / uncheck the Archive box to
get an idea of what "dark" looks like as opposed to "grey" -
hit cancel if you do.

IF IT IS AS I SUSPECT; then you're seeing "grey", not
black. That merely indicates that UNDER "Docs & Sets" there is
a file or folder, somwhere, that has a "read only" attribute
set and you can to dig down and down to find it. Simply
unchecking it at the "Docs & Sets" level will not 'clear it
for all'.

EXCEPTION: Now in XP PRO (which I have) when you have the
situation as I describe above and you "take off" the Read Only
attribute THEN you get this dialogue box that SPECIFICALLY
ASKS if you want to do this to ONLY the current folder -OR- to
all the files and folders UNDER it. - Which makes it really
great.

Secondly: As for what your scanner is doing there are two
things: 1. Do you have permission as administrator to your
system or are you only a "user"? Make sure you are
administrator. 2. Have you gotten the latest XP software from
the maker of your scanner? - Does their web site have a
support / question area? Maybe someone knows specifically what
that problem is.

I hope this helps somewhat. :)
