Changing default folder for hyperlinks

Somehow I previously managed to change the default folder for hyperlinks
between word documents so that, when I click on a client name in a table of
clients and select 'create hyperlink' the folder that comes up in the
hyperlink window is the correct major folder and it is a simple matter then
to navigate to the relevant document in the subfolder.

The previous default folder was "Patients 2006 first half". I now want the
system to go straight to an existing folder "Patients 2006 second half" when
I create a hyperlink. I cannot see any options setting to change that top
default folder.

Any ideas?

I may be totally off-base here, but what happens if you define a "Hyperlink
base" in the file Properties (Summary tab)?

I think you are getting close since it reminded me of relative versus
absolute addresses and I realised that the document containing the client
table was in the same directory - "Patients 2006 first half". I think I
shall have to move that document itself to "Patients 2006 second half" and
then it should be the latter directory that comes up as the defaul directory.

The only problem with doine the above is that, when I move the document, I
shall lose all the hyperlinks and have to edit them again. Do you know of
any way to preserve the hyperlinks when you move a document contianing
hyperlinks from one directory to another? Or is this a problem with my
installation of Word?

My experience with links of all kinds in Word is that they are flaky and
difficult to maintain, though my problem was more with linked graphics than
with hyperlinks per se. There is a setting (Tools | Options | General) to
"Update automatic links at Open," but I think this probably refers to
IncludeText, IncludePicture, and similar fields.
