Changeing domains on XP Pro and retaining settings??

Here is the scenario. I am replacing a NT 4.0 server
with a new W2000 server. When I change the domain name
all of my W2k/XP clients will change domains, thus
setting up a new profile on the computer.

What is the best way to migrate information from an old
domain profile to a new one without having to re-install
all applications??

I guess it is possible to upgrade the NT server to 2000
and then add the new server to the domain, but that seems
out of line if I am going to decommission the NT server
completely.

Any answers will be appreciated
