change background graphic for all slides

I am working with a .potx file and I would like to change the
background image. I did a search in this newsgroup, and found advice
in many threads, to change the photo (which I'm able to do), and then
to check the box/option that allows you to apply the change to all
slides. I cannot see where I am given this choice (to apply the new
photo as a background to all slides). I do want to retain all the text
that is on top of the photo, just change the background. How, with PPT
2007, can I do this?

Hi

RIGHT click on a blank area of the slide
Format Background > Picture > File
Find the picture then apply to all (you might want to select the picture tab
and adjust the brightness etc)

Get back if you need more:

John, when I do that (right-click on a blank area--not the picture
iteslf, then select Format Background, Picture, File), I only see the
following options:

Recolor, Brightness, Contrast, and Reset.

Now I can right-click on the picture itself, and select Change
Picture, but like I said, I don't see an option to apply to all.

I am in XP, though I don't see how that would change things any.

PRR,

Chances are - the current picture is on the "slide master"

if you view the 'masters' you may see it, then follow John's instructions

Just to be clear--I am not interested in editing the picture, I just
want to change the background to another picture. I went to Fill
and chose the new picture I want to use as the background, but it
still didn't appear in the file itself.

I couldn't place it anywhere---not in the slide master, but in the
regular view--I see one slide at a time on the right side, and on the
left, I see two tabs--slide and outline. The slide tab is showing.

Now when I simply used the "change picture" option in the context
menu, I can actually insert the picture--but only for that given slide
that I have right-clicked on. I see no option anywere to "apply to
all."

What view, and what option in the context menu, can I click on, to get
to any place that says, "Apply to all"? I seem to be stuck and can't
figure out what I need to do here.

Just to be clear--I am not interested in editing the picture, I just
want to change the background to another picture.

That's fine.
I went to Fill
and chose the new picture I want to use as the background, but it

By "in the file itself" do you mean on the individual slides, as opposed to on
the slide master or ???

"It sounds, then, as though you're working with a picture that's on a
given
slide or slide master. If so, it's likely covering up the picture
you've
assigned as a background fill."

This is getting way too complicated. I only want to work with one
picture, period.

OK lets start over. I have deleted any and all pictures from the first
slide. But whenever I try to insert a new picture to be the background
(and I do want it to appear on every slide), it only appears on the
first slide.

From a slide without any background, can you tell me how to insert a
picture that will appear on every slide?

Here are the steps (for PP2007)

- Right-click on the empty background.

- Choose "Format Background"

- "Fill" should already be selected, if not choose it. Then on right side of
the dialog box, click on "Picture or texture fill"

- Click the "File" button, under "Insert from:"

- Browse and insert the picture you want.

- Click the "Apply to All" button.

What part of that doesn't work for you?

James, thanks. I was able to see that Apply to all button.

When I did it, in Master View, all the slides had that same photo.

But when I went into a slideshow (or the normal view), only the first
one had it.

Is there some additional step I need, to see that photo as a
background for all (in a slideshow)?

But at least we are making progress now.

Put that picture on the *master* slide, rather than an individual slide, and
then 'send to back' so your content will appear over the top of it (or
insert it as a picture fill as has been suggested). Then it will appear on
every slide in your show based on that master. (Well, except for slides
where 'omit background graphics' has been ticked, but let's not worry about
that right now)

"Apply to All" should have the same effect as placing it on the Master.
Unless you have a separate Title master and slide master, in which case,
putting a picture on the Title master would not affect the Slide master.

Not sure why you are getting a different result, but if it works on the
Master, why not just use that? It is the preferred method (to put all common
elements on the master).

From a slide without any background, can you tell me how to insert a

Rightclick just OFF the slide
Choose Format Background (if it says Format SomeOtherThing, stop. Make
sure nothing's selected, then try again)
Click FILL on the left of the Format Background dialog box.
Click Picture or Texture Fill
Click File ... and choose your picture
In the lower right corner of the dialog box, click Apply To All

That'll do 'er.

OK thanks for your help. Your solution will work when I start out with
an entirely new presentation. I do that on the first slide, and every
new slide I create will then have that same picture as a background.
But when I was working with a particular template (that had a game all
set up, with links et al), clicking apply to all just didn't do it
(i.e., it didn't apply that picture background to any other slide). OK
I guess I was expecting something different than what these features
were prepared to do. Apparently I'll have to copy and paste the links
and slides onto the new presentation.

Thanks to all for your time.
