certain web pages wont load

hello, ok so i have a 4 pc network setup at home. 1 PC is
the netserver and it shares the net for the other 3 pc's.
The netsever is running XP Pro and the other 3 PC's are
running 2000 pro (all updates are installed for all PC's)
The Netserver and 1 of the other PC's have no problem
browsing the net, but my PC and 1 other have trouble
browsing certain websites. The problem only started
recently, everything had been working fine for a couple of
months. When i attempt to load the websites that don't
work it just says "Opening page
http://www.watevaaddressis.com"
but it never loads the page. The problem seems to be
getting worse (more and more web pages that i used to
beable to browse i cannot anymore). The server is runing
Zonealarm Pro but i dont think thats the problem because
I've tried turning it off, and i still have the problem.
We used to have the same problem when the server was
running 2000 pro, then i upgraded it to XP Pro and the
prob went away and we could browse all web sites again,
its just been in the last couple of weeks certain web
pages wont load. I tried setting all the settings in IE to
the same as the PC that works but to no avail.

I also posted this prob in the 2k networking newgroup as i
am not sure weather is IE6 prob or network prob.
Thanks,
Cypher

I'm am experiencing the same problem. I have 4 servers and about 45
pc's but one of my servers will not load certain websites. It seems
to be related to sites that are dynamic content. Google loads fine,
msnbc.com does not, nor does any microsoft site which is a problem
because it is preventing me from running windows updates to get the
latest updates to IE. I'm running IE 6.0sp1. I do not believe I have
any other hotfixes after sp1 since I can not load windows updates to
obtain them. The page does not error out at all no matter how long I
wait for it to finish loading. It either stays completely white or
loads a partial border from the site and that's it. I tried running
regsvr32 urlmon.dll but that did not work. I reset IE back to default
settings as well but have had no luck. This is not a DNS issue for me
since the site name is actually displayed in the title bar immediately
after entering the site plus I do not have a problem with any other
server or client and they all use the same dns server.

Thanks for any input or help.

Hi,
The problem sounds like mismatching MTU (maximum transmission unit)
sizes. I am currently troubleshooting a problem that is very similar
to yours. You can try this:

Testing to determine MTU Value

From the command prompt (a DOS window) on the system directly
connected to the Internet, type one of the following commands to find
the Internet Gateway.

For Windows 98 and Me: WINIPCFG
For Windows 2000 or XP: IPCONFIG

Next, from a command prompt on a client computer, the following
command will be used, with several different values for packet size,
to determine the largest MTU size that works:

PING -f -l nnnn xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

-f tells the command not to fragment the packet.

-l nnnn sets the size of packet, where nnnn corresponds to the value
for MTU being tested.

xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the Gateway IP address

I would suggest running the above command, with the following sequence
of packet size values:

1500 -- Which should result in either an error message about needing
to fragment the packet, or 100% packet loss.

If this first PING command does not fail, then either an MTU mis-match
is not the problem, or the IP address is not located at the other end
of the connection.

1420 -- Which hopefully is low enough that the command will succeed
with 0% packet loss.

Increase the packet size by steps of 10, until the error message or
100% packet loss again occurs.

Decrease the packet size by steps of 2, until the command again
succeeds with 0% packet loss. This resulting value is the correct MTU
for the client systems.

Setting the MTU on Client Systems

Once the MTU value to use has been established, then on every client
system, the Ethernet adapter connected to the network must have the
MTU set to that value.

You can either change the registry or use the Dr TCP tool
http://www.dslreports.com/front/drtcp.html.

If you are using widows XP, SP1 fixes this apparently.
