CDRW quit reading any discs

Yesterday, I was in the middle of burning a disc, and the
CDRW quit working. Now on boot, it reads during boot up,
and XP reads the CDRW drive, but any disc inserted gives
the error message "Please insert a disc into drive...".
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers,
rebooted several times, checked the hardware settings in
device manager, all indications are good. Just won't read
a disc, burned or otherwise. Any ideas before I take it
out and install a new one?

try putting a known good disc in the drive and reboot the system. i have not seen a fix for this for cd-rw or dvd-r drives, since I have seen it happen on both...and had both re-activate by the above procedure.
