cdrom error 31

have a problem w/ dell latitude laptop cdroms. has
internal teac 224e and a plug-in samsung that I
interchange w/ a 3.5 floppy drive. the internal stopped.
the device manager says the drivers can't be found( I've
used the laptop for 4 years and it was fine) and that the
cdrom relies on another device. when I plug in the
samsung, I get the same message as the teac. a week ago
the teac came back, but when I tried to use it, it was
again gone from 'my computer'. in device manager both
cdroms are marked '!'.in troubleshooter I get 'code 31'. I
uninstall and reinstall per troubleshooter but to no
avail. I called Dell but no one could help. Dell thought
it was a bad cdrom. I thought so to until I had the same
problem and error message with the plug-in samsung. the
3.5 drive works when I replace the samsung with it.

Try placing the CD ROM into the bay on the Latitude and using the cable with
the A drive. I recently upgraded my Latitude C to use a DVD drive in place
of the CD ROM. I had to loook around Dell's website to find firmware upgrade
for the drive. Initially the drive installed only as a CD and not DVD.
Unfortunately Dell's tech support has gone to hell in a handbasket and you
will have to search for the firmware upgrade. This should solve your
problem.
