CD-RW drive XP says is CD-ROM

HP pavilion 304w, XP home, Cyberdrv CW058D CD-R/RW. Still
under warranty. It used to read and burn just fine. Tried
HP's CD-RW problem solver to the letter twice and called
HP. They said do a full system restore. That would be my
last resort?
I have heard there is a possible conflict dealing with
XPsp1 sevice pack and your computer's ability to "see" a
CD-RW as opposed to a CD-ROM. The only KB articles on the
subject of this conflict (ms admitted problem) I could
find pertained to windows NT4 servers and 2000 servers.
Device manager says my "CD-ROM" is working fine.

Hidden device not working= pwipf2(.vxd?)

any ideas?

Did you have any CD burning software installed prior to SP-1? If yes, did
you check the manufacturer's website for updates after installing SP1?

Yes, this CD-RW drive would read and burn prior to SP1 and
even after SP1 was installed. I recently downloaded and
installed SP1a (131MB) after uninstalling SP1. I'm not
sure if there is any relationship but it appears that that
is when it no longer recognized the CD-RW as write
capable. Yes, I have checked for any updates even romotely
related to this problem.
The BIOS shows my secondary IDE channel as being hooked to
Cyberdrv CD-R/RW CW058D(name)but lists it as a CD-ROM
device.
I just performed an I/0 test on only the CD-RW after
inserting non-autostart media and came up with these
results:

Error#1:

Not sure what these errors mean. still dont know if its a
hardware or software problem. I cleaned and reseated all
IDE connectors...uninstalled and reinstalled drivers. I
have four drivers all signed and a fifth, unsigned driver
which disappeared after uninstalling and
reinstalling...pfc.sys

I know it could read before SP1, what I need to know is if you had any
specific burning software installed, what it was and what version.

SP1 and SP1a are identical except SP1a does not include MS JVM which should
not be an issue here.

HP had "Record Now" program on here, pre-
installed...RecordNow, Version 4.50, VERITIS software
corporation. Everything was already on here..I didn't add
any extra CD stuff.

Okay, did you check HP site for updates for Record Now. The move to SP1
caused problems for the CD burning apps and they required updating for SP1.
It's possible you need to update Record Now.

S

It's working! I just went to Veritas and downloaded an
update..px something. Now I can copy files with the
Recordnow program. Thanks for steering me in the right
direction. I'll see if HP has that update also.
