CD RW drive does not see any medium

My CD Burner will play any kind of medium, but any time I
try to burn something, it will not see any medium in the
drive. It will say the device is empty and wants you to
insert a disc when there is already one in there. I have
Nero and have also tried the burning utility in XP, but
both say the drive is empty. I also inserted another CD
RW drive from another computer that works fine into my
computer and it will also not recognize any discs in the
drive when burning. If anyone could give me some
suggestions, I would appreciate it.
Thanks

I get the same error every time I burn, and usually ejecting then
reinserting the medium works. Occasionally I have to do it 2 or 3 times. I
assume you tried this?

Had same problem recently with Windows XP. Loaded Nero
5.5.10.42 bundled and now use Nero Express to drag and
drop into Nero Express display box. Works fine. However,
still cannot do the Windows XP copy from My Computer.
Nero also has an InCD application which works like your
CD is a floppy once formatted. Tried all of MS
suggestions, fixes, etc., and never did Windows XP Home
to work as it did a month ago?????
Apparently there is a bug in one of Windows XP updates?

yeah, it ejects my disc immediately too and I reinsert
the disc, and then it just hangs cause it still thinks
that I did not insert a disc.

I have the same problem!
This is an error which MicroSoft is aware of. They have a fix, but I have
not found it anywhere. The fix will be in XP sp2. Reference is Q817357 in MS
knowledgebase. It seems that certain programs that run corrupts XP so it
can't find files on cd-rom or dvd-rom.

Hope XP sp2 comes soon!

There are valid reasons for having to call MS for some hotfixes.

1. It may be a Beta hotfix and not thoroughly tested, therefore not
ready for public release.
2. The hotfix may cause problems on systems that do not need it or do
not exhibit the exact symptoms the fix addresses so they want to make
certain you have the exact problem the fix is for.

The call is free and it normally takes only a few minutes.
