CD-R drive/software failure

I have two computers, laptop and desktop, both running XP SP2. Neither of
them will recognise a blank cd-r in the drive so will not copy data files or
burn audio. In the properties tab for the drive in My Computer a brand new,
unused cd-r is shown as full with 0 bytes of available space; I know the
discs are ok because they work fine on other machines. Is this a spooky
coincidence?, have I got a virus from somewhere or have I made the same
mistake on both machines?
Device Manager says that the drives are working normally, the Troubleshooter
does not have a question that refers to this type of problem. I have even
tried replacing the drive in the desktop to no avail, which makes me think it
must be a software/configuration glitch but I don't know where else to look
for it.

Are you sure it says it is full with no bytes of available space? In the
last tab, are you set to allow recording on that cd?

There is no virus that does this that I have ever heard of. Have you
installed third party cd writing software of any type? Some such programs
will disable XP's native CD writing software. Right click a your CD writer
drive icon and select Properties->Recording Tab. Ensure the box is check
that enables writing on the drive. If the tab is missing and then the
problem could be software of hardware related. Check here for possible
answers in the Problems section http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.htm
