cd not working

Hello
I have a problem with a cd not working on a sony laptop. I've talked to
others that have had similar issues after installing i-tunes. The cd player
will only work if I stick the restore cd in the tray. I have quick time
installed (not i-tunes) but can not confirm what sofware or update causes
this problem. Is there any kind of work around to get the cd to work again
without re-installing the entire operating system which I did the last time
this happened
thanks mc

At one time, ITunes installer included CD burner software from
a company called Gear Software. That software messes with the
registry. You would hope, that when you uninstalled ITunes, it
removed the Gear stuff as well. (In Peter's answer, the
solution involves UpperFilter, and you'll notice in this
article, that they're doing stuff with UpperFilter as well.)
Have a look through here, and see if the stuff in question,
is still in the registry.

They have another excuse here, but I doubt this is your problem.

Well I tried the auto fix and part of the registry fix manually ( I did not
have an upper filters to delete). Then I manually unistalled the cd drive in
the device manager, but this did not work either. I saw an error window on
reboot that said SPM Module has encountered a problem and needs to shut
down. Perplexing.....

Did you find any of these using regedit ?

In the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} key:
remove the GEARAspiWDM entry in the UpperFilters value. Note that the entries in this value are double byte.

No, i checked the registry and nothing was there. I tried uisng the methods
Peter posted on the microsoft site but still no luck. I even tried the part
where you delete the lower files if the upper files do no exist in the
registry, but now I keep getting the error window at boot up:
SPM Module has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. I do have a
lower.bak file in the registry maybe i'll use that or just restore the
registry....

You have to be careful with Upperfilter/Lowerfilter. You can't remove
just anything with those words in it. Some are associated with keyboard/mouse,
and you can actually lose control of your computer if you get carried away
(input devices stop working). The Microsoft automated fix tool is probably safe,
but some other "scorched earth" techniques are not advised.

If you have none of the GearSoftware stuff, then perhaps the ITunes uninstall
removed them ?

Maybe some other software is causing this....who knows...
I wonder why I do not have upperfilter in the registry? I tried the
automated tool, maybe I will try it again. I would think there is a simple
solution to all this without having to re-load the OPsys again, or maybe
I'll get an external dvd....

Have you written down the "SPM Module" error details ? Perhaps searching
on that, or looking for some Event Viewer, Dr. Watson or otherwise, error
output, may give a hint.

I had the same problem for months. Took my PC to a repair shop and they
couldn't figure it out.

I found Doug Knox's site:
http://www.dougknox.com/
He's a Microsoft MVP.

I used the script - Restore CD/DVD Drives to Explorer
(look in WinXP fixes)

or

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_cd_dvd_fix.htm

It fixed my PC right away.
