CD & DVD-RW Drives Not Working

S

Steve McGuinness

Hi There.

XP Pro stopped recognising my CD drive awhile back. Although annoying, I
assumed that the data cable was loose inside, & since I also have a DVD-RW
drive, I have put off wriggling away under the desk into the nest of cables
to sort it. However the same thing has now happened to the DVD drive.

Device Manager still reports that they are both there, but with a warning
icon beside them, & an Error 37 when checking status.

Both drives work fine with Linux, which I've got on a dual boot setup.

I could take it back to the store (Evesham Technology, UK), but who knows
how long before I got it back.

I've tried downloading drivers, but that hasn't worked.

Although it nowhere near as bad for crashes as Win 98, it still has
crashed/hung on at least a couple of dozen occasions over the last 10
months, so I reckon some system files have got corrupted.
When similar things happened before with Win 98SE, I usually just
reinstalled Windows. However, it seems my new PC only comes with a rescue
disc, despite me specifically asking for the full version.

Any advice welcome

Steve

PS. No, I don't have any previous System Restore points.

Thanks

I can't reinstall the various driver files, since it is the CD & DVD drives
which need drivers in the first place. Catch 22.

All I can find on the net is Firmware stuff, which is irrelevant..

Hi Steve - See here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];270008 It may not
sound like it applies but take the steps outlined there to delete the Upper
and Lower Filters, OR . . .

You can also use this reg file to handle these deletes (it takes care of
deleting some other things which can cause problems as well):
http://www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip This is
pretty much the "standard" fix for this type of issue. Backup first so that
you can recover if there are problems (there aren't usually, BTW).

It's recommended by Compaq/HP that you run FilterFixer also when this occurs
to recreate the correct entries, here:
