CD Drive no longer recognized

My laptop has a DVD drive and a CD drive. The CD drive is
a SONY CD-RW and is swappable with the floppy drive - but
I never use the floppy. When I upgraded from Windows-ME
to Windows XP-Pro it stopped recognizing the CD drive
(which I used for making CD backups of everything). The
Create-CD software said I needed to upgrade to
Roxio's "Easy CD & DVD Creator v-6.0"; so I shelled out
another $100 for that upgrade. But now when I pop in a
CD, the drive locks up and is a challenge to eject!!!
(The same CD's will work in the DVD drive.)

I've searched the Windows Updates for a new driver (the
driver is SONY CD-RW CRX700E) but find no fixes. I
ran "Online Crash Analysis" and it says "Error Caused by a
Device Driver". Sooo, I tried to "Roll Back to the
Previous Version of a Device Driver" (Q306546) and I tried
to "Start Computer with the Last Known Good Configuration"
(Q307852). Neither one fixed the problem.

Meanwhile I'm unable to make backup copies on CD's!!!
Anyone have a solution for this??

Sounds like you have a piece of hardware that is NOT compatable with XP ---- It is not a driver problem
