Model HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4480B

Cannot get Roxio to write to any disk in this drive. It's useless. Error log
says The device, \Device\CdRom1, has a bad block.

Okay - could be bad hardware. It does happen with moving parts.

Looks to me like RW/DVD means that it will read and write a CD, but only play
a DVD. That's why you cannot write to a DVD.

Well, even though this was someone else's issue, it's now become a problem of
mine, as well... I have updated the firmware, but the device can only read
cd/cd-r/cd-rw... I can't use windows to see if the drive has access to the
FAT table, because it just gives me a blank screen in explorer. Yes, I do
realize that errors occur, which exemplify the chaos theory, but this doesn't
make any sense. It's recognizing one format, yet not the other. It seems
quite illogical, since it was designed for both... Any ideas that are more
direct than suggestive?

Sorry, I negated the fact that it only reads cd-roms and not dvd-roms.
Ironic, isn't it?

Hi,

A common mistake for many new users as I once was, and that is DVD has two
different formats (+, -) and unlike CD disc which has only one format.

If your drive is design for +, you can only write CD disc with + format, and
the same for the one designed for "-". Unless your drive is designed for
both formats, you can only write to one format and not both types of DVD
discs.

Strange enough, reading in many cases is not strictly bound by those
limitations though.

Hope this helps.
