CD RW/DVD rom reads and writes CDs, but doesn't read DVDs

Hello,

I've got a HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4482B DVD reader in my PC, but it will only
read and write CDs and not read DVD's. The hardware manager says that the
driver works correctly and when I get into help, I get an error message that
the correct help file can not be displayed, so I can't any further by
myself. Can someone help me?

If memory serves me correctly I recall we encountered a number of problems
with this optical drive although I can't precisely recall the type of
problems involved.

Take a look at this Lenovo site that has a firmware update for that drive...

I'm pretty sure this was an LG-manufactured optical drive so access the LG
site and see if there's any info there about your problem and whether there
are other downloads available for the device, e.g., updated drivers,
firmware, etc.

As I'm sure you're aware that device (even when it's working!) does not have
DVD-burner capability (as I recall). Assuming it's practical for you to do
so I wonder if you would be better off simply purchasing a more modern type
of device at this time. Their prices have fallen dramatically in the past
year or so.

The DVD laser is shot. The single most common failure mode with these
devices.
