Try right clicking the item(s) you want to burn and select Send To> CD
That should get you back into the XP burning wizard instead of launching
the WMP burning tools.

Arky, did you see the suggestions that were posted in response to your
other posts? Some suggested checking your autoplay settings. While doing
that, check that CD burning for the drive is also turned on. Both of these
things (autoplay and CD burning settings) are in the properties sheets for
the burner/drive.

Arky, I wish I had more suggestions to offer.

Let's go back a step: Dragging and dropping files to a CD is not something
XP burning is especially good at. The burning method that it uses closes
out the writeable disk after each burn. You cannot add files to CDRs and
while it can "add" files to existing CD-RWs, it rewrites the entire disk
and the revised "catalog" wastes a lot of space. Because of this, most
people use software capable of "packet writing" for drag/drop and on the
fly burning instead of XP's built in features.

What XP burning is good at is "one shot" burning - accumulating the files
that you want on a single disk and burning them at the same time.

Personally, I never used XP's burning very often but when I did use it, I
found it easiest to access via the "task list" in Explorer. The task list
being the column on the left in an Explorer window where you can select
"burn files to CD." (Since I used XP burning so rarely, that's why these
answers seem a bit "vague" - sorry.)

Anyhow, I remember one of the Media Player updates causing it to jump in
whenever a music file was being recorded - grabbing it away from 3rd party
software as well as XP's burning. IIRC, I went into Media Player settings
and disabled its own automatic burning right there within that program.
Figuring if I ever did want to burn with Media Player, I could simply
launch WMP and start the burning from within that program.

I don't know why Media Player seems to manage 80% of the job and then quits
on you. Perhaps a lack of free space or RAM. The audio conversions and then
the staging and burning that has to take place requires a good amount of
free space.

Another thing to consider: Some of the newer blazing fast recorders have
trouble with the older 2x and 4x disks. Conversely, older drives can have
trouble with the newer 10x (and higher speed) disks.

Another general suggestion: When having trouble burning a disk, try burning
at the slowest speeds allowed by your drive and your disks.

Below are some references for CD burning in XP. You've tried just about
everything so far but perhaps you'll find something in one of these
