Cat 4.8's

Any idea when the 4.8's are going to be released? I know the beta is
available, but am waiting for the official ones.

I really want to know about this too since I have a re-install of Windows
planned. I would hate to go ahead with the re-install tonight and find out
that the 4.8 drivers are out Thursday or Friday. I like a nice pristine box
and it would be great to have the 4.8 drivers right from the get-go. I do
wonder if the release of the beta 4.9 drivers yesterday was intended to
placate us for the time being so that they can buy a few more days to get
the 4.8's out. I hope I'm wrong - I'd love to see 4.8 this week.

The ati uninstaller does a godd job of removing all ati stuff, so don't
worry about the fresh install. Or use norton ghost to make an image without
drivers...

IMHO I don't see the point now ATI has released a 4.9 BETA.
Obviously there are no fixes for OpenGL in 4.8, it would be weird if
they are re-doing 4.8 with 4.9 fixes just for Doom 3. :|

Let me make a prediction, new Catalyst drivers (with new Control Panel)
for when HL2 is released. *grin* :D

Hehe. ATI desperately needs an overhaul of the control panel. At least they
should add some way to control the refresh rates for different resolutions.

Norton Ghost rules. Actually, I have a dual-boot between 2000 and XP on my
main computer and I went ahead and re-installed 2000 tonight. I just
finished the re-install moments ago with the Cat 4.7 drivers. It was good
since Creative Labs released new drivers for my sound card a few days ago
and I also have DirectX 9.0c in there as well now. I mainly only use 2000
for productivity and game demos, so having the 4.8 drivers isn't critical.
Tomorrow I will finish the second half of my dual boot and I hope the 4.8's
come out. If not, as you say, I can always use the ATI uninstaller you
speak of. Is it also wise to use the ATI SmartGart remover as well
afterwards?

I've never used the smartgart remover and I've had perfect luck switching
drivers.

I'm not sure what you mean, but you can override the xp 60hz 3d rate bin the
monitor settings under displays.

It's not resolution specific. I want 100Hz in 640x480 and in 800x600, but
only 85Hz in 1024x768. I can do that with some software, but I think this
should be done from the driver control panel (like in nvidia drivers).

The Smartgart remover is not for system cleaning. It's for those who
wish to run their display driver/Control panel without Smartgart.

cat-uninstaller.exe (or the ATI - Software Uninstall Utility as it
appears in Add/Remove Programs when you install an 'all-in-one' High
Speed driver suite) is what you use for cleaning Ati driver/software
remnants from your system. I find it very effective.
