Nightmare but getting there

New system coming up .. AMD 64 on Gigabyte mobo, with ATI 9800 Pro 128 and
160 gig SATA drive. First installed Catalyst 4.8, and loaded 3dMark2001.
9800 reset almost immediately during the test. Loaded Far Cry Demo1 ..
same deal except system totally locked up at blank screen. Cleaned off
the Cat 4.8, and installed Cat 3.2 which came on a cd with the 9800.
Same results. Went in to SmartGart(?) settings and set Fast Writes to
OFF, and APG to 4x, and rebooted. Again ran 3dMark2001, and got a
benchmark of 18,310 .. not bad. Ran Far Cry, and the system autodetected
to Very High. Very good detail in graphics, and very good frame rate.
No delays in any actions, including firing the first shot which typically
shows a little lag. Loaded Far Cry demo 2 to look at color and depth of
field. Absolutely beautiful. Am very tempted to go back to Cat 4.8 now
that I seem to have identified the culprits .. fastwrites and agp 8x.

Have you installed the motherboard drivers ?

You should be running 8x on that video card and motherboard.
Fastwrites set to "Off"

Dr Richard Cranium

imho: you might just want to go corsair cas 2 ddr.

the AMD 64 (at least the 3200+) is rock solid at at 8x and fastwrites with the ATI
9800pro.
http://www.smokeypoint.com/My_PC.htm

i am running the cat 4 6 's .

i also used cpuz http://www.cpuid.com/ and clockgen http://www.cpuid.com/clockgen.php
to sort out the various bus probs.

hope this helps,

** <Mike> at pretested cpu's is sending me two 512meg sticks of CAS2 400ddr ($134 each)
and a 485 watt power supply,
** what the problem with the HPa530n seems to be is that PC3200 cas3 memory will not run
at 400ddr when more than one memory stick is utilized. (in other words, you CAN'T run 400
mhz DDR with one gig memory or more. The memory bus shifts back to 166mhz and runs your
PC3200 cas 3 400 ddr at 333 ddr.
note: the AMD HTT bus is not the FSB is not the memory bus. Great that the HTT bus can run
1600 mhz, but so what. All I am interested in here is getting my HP a530n up to one gig of
400 DDR and have the stinking memory bus stay at 200 mhz.
further note; NO the 400 DDR cas3 1 gig (2x512) running at 333 ddr will not work - crash
big time all the time. So you have to pull one 512 out. Anyway I'll let you know here if
the cas2's fix the memory bus shift (200 to 166) at one gig.
IF it doesn't fix the problem, then i'll get another main board that will work.
OKAY!! fast forward to one week later: the package was delivered. I'm now running the
memory bus at rock solid 200mhz, the HTT at 200mhz (big wow ?) and the 2 each Corsair

Xms3200 512mb 400mhz CL2, Ultra-performance DDR memory, Extreme Memory Speed XMS. The
important thing to remember here is that "CL2". I noticed some Kingston XMS is still CL3.
Anyway my prob was solved with the mem freq. and I am happy with the 1 gig !!

I agree about the Cat 4.6 I may just go to that before the
4.8. I have 4.6 running on another much slower system, and
Far Cry looks good.

Have you installed the motherboard drivers ?

Oh yes. I'm a pro. System mobo is GA-K8VM800M. It is so
new that giga-byte.com doesn't even have drivers posted
yet. That is why I went to the included cd. What a hunt
that was. Drivers are very old too !!!!!! .. 2003
You should be running 8x on that video card and motherboard.
Fastwrites set to "Off"

I agree, but this mobo BIOS says nothing about fast writes
anywhere. It also has an embedded VGA which may or may not
be disabled ???? Nothing in the BIOS again. 9800 runs fine
in apps like Office, etc, but as soon as the crashing in
3dMark2001 started, I figured it was fast writes. Word on
the hacker sites is AGP 8X is poop, and everybody sets it
to 4x .. all the gamers do that. So I went and did like
wise, and the system now runs like a rocket. 18,310 is
the fastest benchmark in 3dmark2001 I ever personally saw.
In Far Cry, I have rocks and pebbles on the beach and
3 levels of waves rolling in. Also, the grass doesn't
appear as I "walk" towards it. Now, I give it to the
engineering students to try Solidworks ... fingers crossed.
