50, try some 200. Inc things like symantec AV, security software....
Way to go Micro$haft.

I suppose most of those compatibility problems are caused
by the firewall that incorrectly blocks attempts to access
the internet. So I would imagine that the problem is solved
quite simply by manually creating an exception in the firewall
settings tab that allows internet access for those "broken"
programs. Or by turning the firewall completely off.

Personally I have had no problems at all after installing SP2
and I'm even using its firewall. Didn't notice any erratic
behaviour in Nero6 either, even if XP warned me about
its "known incompatibilities" with SP2. So makes me wonder.

Funny you mention that... ZoneAlarm is not going to work as well!

It's pretty bad, there are some pretty common programs here. Nero 6,
Photoshop Elements, AOL, DivxPlayer, Kazza, ICQ pro, Norton Antivirus,
Yahoo, .. the list goes on.. it's a mess.

ZoneAlarm, AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ Pro, Yahoo! Instant Messenger all
work fine on my laptop with SP2 for the past week now.

Norton's Internet Security, Norton's Anti-Virus, AIM, Yahoo! IM, ICQ Pro,
Nero, Bearshare, Photoshop all work fine on my desktop with SP2 for the
past week now.
Think I'll pass.

Your choice.

No, I am a US Army veteran, full-time student, former police dispatcher/911

You do know it was just a TV show... right?

But "they" will still be assimilated. Even if they remain an independent
nation and become strong, they will be assimilated.

Well, SP2 could be the mother of all service packs. Maybe just not in a
good way. :)

I have Windows XP on my big computer, but that computer is not used for
Internet at all. No Internet connection is currently set up on it. Is
there any benefit or reason for a computer not on the Internet to have
Service Pack 2? Does it contain all of the critical and normal updates that
have been released after Service Pack 1?

Dunno, guess everyone who have went to Sweden to ask
them about that have been assimilated and never seen since.

That's a good question Night. I believe all of the previous OS enhancements
/ fixes released by MS, even the ones that don't necessarily have to do with
security, were bundled into SP2. That being said, I would install SP2 on the
"big computer" :), last. Give the Service Pack some time to propagate to the
whole planet earth and even more time for all the applications to catch up.

That's what I would do.

Not quite, Pluvo.

Nero 6, Norton 2004, Zone Alarm, etc. all work fine with XP SP2.

Good news that those programs are working fine. I got my 'alert' this
morning when I booted up. It's ready for download. I might do it this
weekend, after watching for any "omg" posts. :)

Yeah I think I'm going to take the wait and see attitude, unless extreme
curiosity gets the better of me! Gotta love good ol' Norton Ghost. :)
Still, I'm sure it will be a while before Service Pack 2 becomes a
recommended thing from a driver standpoint.

While on the subject, I noticed that SP2 complained that Norton Ghost 6.5
is not compatible with it.

Not sure what they mean by that exactly as I used Ghost 6.5 to restore my
SP1 version.

Think Ill wait a bit before I take the jump. At least Ghost will give you a
chance to try before you commit to it fully. It's nice to have that safety
net.

Lucky for me, I have the DOS-level executable for Norton Ghost. I use my
Windows 98 or ME boot disc to get into DOS doing a minimal boot and do all
of my business from the good ol' fashioned DOS prompt. :)

Same here, I use the floppy. They must be referring to my Norton Ghost
2001 Explorer windows application. It does come in handy if you just need
one file off your backup CDs or ghost files.
