Capture Device not recognized in Movie Maker

Hello,

I have my video cam connected to my computer by USB (not firewire). I have
it turned on and the video cam says "USB Mode" like it should. My computer
shows the camera as a removable disk in explorer. When I go to MM to capture
it gives me an error: A video capture device was not detected. Verify that
device was turned on and connected properly".

Why is MM not recognizing my video cam?

thank you

Because Movie Maker likes digital video which is captured by firewire. USB
video is considered analog, despite the fact you may indeed have a digital
camcorder, you're not outputting digital video if you use USB.

Hi Cari, thanks for the response. I did not know that I was stepped down to
analog by using a usb connection. I had thought of purchasing a firewire
connection so I guess this is what I will need. I dont have a fire wire
card (guess that is what it is called) so I assume I will have to purchase
some kind of card? Do you know what this card is called?

Thank you
