Capitalization does not work after a number and a period

After a number is typed at the end of a sentence, i.e., "1946.", Word does
not capitalize the first letter of the new sentence. How do I fix this?

As far as I know you can't fix this and just have to live with it. Now and
again, write your own capitals.
