Can't use Windows Community

S

Sandee

This all started on July 27. I was having a problem with my Windows Mail.
When I would click on an e-mail link to send an e-mail, I would get an error
message saying the address is incorrect or something like that. When this
annoying little window kept popping up and I couldn't get it to go away, I
did what I always do when I'm desparate. I went to the discussion group in
Windows Community. It was in the Vista catagory Windows Mail & Contacts
and my subject was "I can't send a message from an e-mail link." I got 2
replies stating I had to go to my default programs, click on Windows Mail,
then click on set this program as default. I have not been able to get into
the Windows discussion since then. Not even to rate the answers to my
original post. I can read the messages but I cannot post a new topic or
respond to a thread. Last week when I got to the Community page it showed I
was signed in. But it still would not let me post. Now I am not signed in
and no matter how many times I click on the sign in button, the window
blinks off and then comes back up and it still says sign in. That is what
happens if I try to click on reply or new topic. So far I have tried
deleting all my cookies, hitting F5 (I read that somewhere) I even did a
system restore. Nothing works. What have I got screwed up on my computer?
I am on a different computer right now. Please help.

You have probably saved an incorrect password for your Passport account. In
Windows Mail, the Tools menu, Accounts, highlight mail account, Properties
will let you set a new password. Likewise, the saved Passport password can
be deleted from IE, in the IE browser Tools menu, "Delete Browsing History,
"Delete Passwords"

Use the "Ratings" feature. It helps the new users.

I have exactly the same problem - I cannot sign into discussions

Yet in another Tab I have my live.au email account open . I thought the
Live Users Id and Password were my Passport user Id and Password - the
signin screen is EXACTLY the same screen

My Outlook gets mail from my Live mail account using same user id and
password

I am having exactly this same problem signing into Windows Vista
Community as the previous poster Nikilet. However, if it's my first
attempt, I do get the sign-in page. I sign in, and it goes back to the
Community page but it still says "sign in", and I am unable to post any
questions. If I click on "sign in" again, I just get the community page
like Nikilet above.

However...if I click on the Microsoft.com Home link at the top, when I
get there it says "log out". So I'm logged in, I guess, except for some
reason it doesn't take at Communities. I can log in at Hotmail, Windows
Live, anywhere else but Communities. I've checked my credentials,
everything's set up. Can anyone help? Thank you.

When I go to Communities, I don't have to login because my IM has me
already logged in using my Live ID and password.

Try logging out of Hotmail and then logging in at Communities just for
the heck of it. Don't use an auto-fill in. Do it manually.

I'm also having the same problem. Got here through Microsoft Public Access.
Never had this problem before. Keeps looping me back to the page where the
Sign In button is displayed, but will allow me to rate a post! Can't post or
reply, though. Tried clearing cookies, starting without add-ons, etc. Used
these discussions many times, never a problem. Appreciate any suggestions.

Go to "Sign In Problem", the thread right below this one, and read the posts.
I think that will help you until they fix this. Got in through
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general. Good luck.

Don't think it's the ISP. I was using the same ISP before when I had no
problem. This is new. May require a fix on the community website. So now I
just come in through public access. Gave up on the old way in.

Do yourself a BIG favour - ditch the horrible web interface and use a proper
News reader.

You will get a far better "experience" by dumping the horrible web interface
and using a proper news reader instead. You already have one on your
machine - Outlook Express prior to Windows Vista and Windows Mail and News
in Vista.

See this on how to set up Outlook express as your news reader: (I expect
Windows mail and News is horribly similar....)

How to set up OE as a News reader:

I have a new machine with Vista Home Premium on it, and I don't see that OE
is installed. Always used OE in the past, was fine, and I don't care for
Windows Mail, but with all the other web problems I've had I'm really
reluctant to try to change anything now. Vista and IE7 have given me more
trouble than I've ever had in the past, but I'm learning to work around some
of it, and live with the rest. I don't want to make it worse. Should have
just stuck with XP, IE6, and OE. But thanks for the info.
