Cant use Instant Messaging in Outlook XP with MSN 6.1

I just installed Messenger 6.1. I went into Outlook XP and unchecked the
run in background, run when windows starts and away in 10 minutes boxes
shown in Outlook options instant messaging. Now when I select options in
Outlook, it says that I need to at least install MSN messenger 3.5 or
greater to enable instant messaging options in Outlook. I have 6.1 MSN
Messenger installed. Why is Outlook now telling me that I do not? It
automatically opens the MSN 6.1 download page and says I need to go back to
options after the download is complete and the options will be enabled.

I tried rerunning the MSN install from add remove programs but that did not
help. What is going on? I did not have any problems before I installed
6.1????

Was I correct in turning Windows Messenger off under options? It seems that
if I leave windows Messenger on I have a problem with XP signing in with
Windows Messenger instead of MSN Messenger and then sometimes I have trouble
accessing web pages.
