Can't use cd/cd-rw drive - can't read other posts

I realise that there are other posts about this same topic but for some
reason I can't read them, therefore I would appreciate if you could also
e-mail me possible solutions, otherwise I won't know whats going on.
About a week ago, my cd/cd-rw drive stopped registering cd's. It still opens
and appears to function normally, but it does not allow me to use CD's or to
copy music/work to cd's because it simply doesn't seem to realise they are
there. I have not installed any new programs or hardware so I'm not quite
sure what the problem is. I use Windows XP and have an eMachines 420
processor.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm sorry, but no free email support. Asked here, answered here for the
benefit of all. Use Google Groups to search newsgroups. Also, use a
newsreader to access Usenet instead of the very clunky web interface.
I'll give you information on Usenet after answering your question about
the cd drive.

If the drive appears in Windows (My Computer) but just doesn't function,
troubleshoot by swapping it out for a known-working cd/rw drive. If you
don't have one on hand or are uncomfortable working with your
computer's hardware, take the machine to a professional computer repair
shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA). If the drive is toast
(and they don't last forever), consider replacing it with a DVD burner
instead. In any case, cd/rw drives are inexpensive.

Now, for better access to newsgroups:

Since you are using the web interface, you may not realize that this is
really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you
learn to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows,
but you can use Outlook Express since you already have it. Here are
some links to information about newsgroups:
