Can't update any programs

Suddenly I can't seem to use the update feature on any programs. I
tried my virus checker, MS automatic updates, and several other
programs. I either get a "socket error" message, a message saying am
not connected to the internet (I am) or it just hangs. This only
started a few days ago.

I have a PentiumD with Win XP media ed. and 2.0 GB memory.

I have checked for spyware and run the virus checkers and it is clear

If broadband disconnect the main power lead for 2 or 3 minutes and
then try again, what you are doing here is rebooting the modem.

Socket error occurs on dial up when there is no dial tone. In both
case check the internet account settings, E-mail address etc etc and
check that your Firewall isn't set to block all.
