Can't uninstall TCP/IP..HELP

R

Rick Guzzey

After what lookes like an adware cleanup of my W2000 Pro machine. I can't
access my router. The system sends out but nothing comes back..Other
machines on the router are fine BTW. With some digging I've noticed that

IPCONFIG

Connection-Specific DNS Suffix: <----- missing usually WorkGroup
IP adress: 169.254.223.197 <-------doesn't look right should be 192.168.x.x
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 <<-------good
Default Gateway: <--------missing usually 192.168.2.1

IPCONFIG /RELEASE

All adapters bound to DHCP do not have DHCP addresses. The Addresses were
automatically configured and can't be released.

IPCONFIG /RENEW

Error occoured when renewing adapter local area conn2: an operation was
attempted on somthing that isn't a socket.

I saw an article on MS about copying your registry values for WIN and WIN2
to a diskette...then deleteing them

then going to the local area connection properties and uninstalling
TCP/IP...then reinstalling it...

Well..when I try and uninstall it...

I see this

Could not uninstall the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) component. Internet
Protocol(TCP/IP) is still required by the following components and cannot be
uninstalled until those components are uninstalled.

Simple TCP/IP services
Print Services for Unix

What gives??????

Anyone know what I can do to solve this....?

I've done everything I know how to....course I don't have any idea of how to
uninstall the above first...

Seems there is something more wrong here...

Any help would be appreciated....the system comes up and runs ...just can't
communicate at all

No pings..or anything get anywhere..

Thanks

Rick

What gives??????

1. Hardware problem......., cable, nic, switch port, etc. That is the
primary cause of receiveing a 169.254.*.* address.

2. A second possibility is the DHCP device (Cable/DSL Device?) is no longer
functioning properly. But #1 is the most common.

That would also stop me from removing TCP/IP?

I thought it might be a virus thing..since a number of the VC2 was
found...then deleted...

Go to add and remove programs/Windows components and uninstall simple tcp/ip
services and print servies for unix under networking services and other file
and print services. See if that helps. --- Steve

Check your network settings on the problem computer. I ran into a similar
problem. The 169.254.etc is a default address when W2k TCP/IP can't find the
gateway. In my case something reset my network settings. Go to Control
Panel_Networks and Dialup_Local Area Connection_Properties_TCP/IP and make sure
you have selected "obtain an IP address automatically" and "obtain DNS
.......automatically". Then keep going with Advanced and make sure DCHP is
Enabled.
Good Luck
