Can't uninstall AD!?!?!?

J

Jonathan Telep

I need to get AD uninstalled and reinstalled on a server
though and now have a problem that's been caused by
trying to follow the MS Knowledge Base Article: 294328
(How to Reinstall a Dynamic DNS Active Directory -
Integrated Zone). In the first couple of steps I'm
supposed to go in the the %systemroot%\winnt\system32\DNS
folder and delete the text DNS Zones files. So I did, I
then began following the rest of the steps and quickly
realized that I didn't understand the rest of the
instructions, as a result, managed to screw the AD install
up even worse than it was before. In a fit of frustration
I created a new, default "forward lookup" zone file under
DNS and then rebooted the system thus allowing users who
still had their workstations pointing to that domain
controller access. The problem that I'm having now is that
I need to uninstall and then reinstall AD in order to give
it the right information (or rather replicate information
from another domain controller that I've set up to start
building the new domain) and it won't let me. Whenever I
run "dcpromo" now I get to the point where it begins
"Configuring Active Directory" and it then fails saying:

Failed finding a suitable domain controller for the domain

"The specified domain either does not exist or could not be
contacted."

Does anyone know how do I fix this?

Jonathan,

So long as this isn't the last DC in your domain (you'd loose all the data),
run dcpromo /forceremove to force the process. After that, remove the zones
from DNS, and rerun dcpromo to repromote the machine.
