can't stop windows messenger application

I've supposedly disabled Windows Messenger using the procedure in:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/learnmore/stopspam.mspx
That procedure "disables"
C\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
in the Messenger Properties dialog box.

Even so, the "windows messenger not signed in" icon continues to be
displayed in the lower right corner of my start menu. I assume it is
running in background, but I've not spotted it among the list of
processes listed by the Windows Task Manager. It does not seem to be
the same as msmsgs.exe, as the latter doesn't disappear when I force
windows messenger to close.

I can stop the windows messenger icon from appearing by unchecking the
box in the System Configuration Utility (START/RUN/MSconfig), but then
Windows posts an alert each time I start my machine saying I've elected
not to start Windows Messenger.

I'm trying to cut out unneeded applications on the old laptop that I use
as a juke box because it has limited memory and speed.

Can anyone suggest another way to block windows messenger from starting?

To disable "Windows Messenger":

Open "Windows Messenger" and from the Toolbar select
Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck:

"Run this program when Windows starts" and
"Allow this program to run in the background", then
click OK.

Next, open Outlook Express and from the Toolbar select
Tools > Options and under the General tab uncheck
"Automatically log on to Windows Messenger" and click
APPLY.

Alternative:

Prevent Windows Messenger from automatically running
