Can't start WinXP after Win2K install

I have WinXP Pro installed on one partition. I just
installed Win2K Pro on another partition (same PC, same
physical disk). After I installing Win2K SP4, I am unable
to boot to the WinXP installation. When trying to boot
WinXP, I get the following error, "Windows 2000 could not
start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\system32\config\systemd" Mind you, I'm trying to
start WinXP, not 2000 when I get this error. Anyhow, I
went to the MS Knowlegde Base, found the error and applied
the proposed solution, which in short, is to use the
Recovery Console to rename "system" to "system.old" and
reinstall a new "system" file from the WinSK Setup CD and
this reinstalls the registry hive that was missing or
corrupted.

This did not fix my problem, I am still unable to boot
WinXP. Short of performing a complete reinstall of XP,
does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to fix this.
Thanks in advance.

Hi JMM

The problem here is that win 2k replaces the bootloader files with older versions and thus it does not work . The easiest way to fix this problem is boot into win 2000 then put in the win XP cd and browse to the i386 folder. then copy the followint 2 files and paste it to the C drive NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM. then reboot the system you should be able to boot succesfully. The renaming of System file is no good here as the registry hives are not corrupt but the bootloader is replaced by a older version
