Can't shut down or log off...HELP!

Yesterday was the first I noticed this happeneing...I have windows XP office
and everything was fine until yesterday, I went to shut down my PC last
night, using the start button....then Turn off Computer button and nothing
happened... So then I tried to shut down through logging off first and then
turning off PC, Still NOTHING...it won't shut down or log me off...I have to
push the off button manually in order to turn system off...
Any help, direction or advice would greatly appreciated...

this could be a hardware problem. posibly the power supply. what kind of
machine do you have?
