Can't share files

Hi,

Well.. Firstly, Im really bad with computers and been looking through all
these questions etc .. to be honest I havent much of an idea what's going on
in them!

I have my laptop and desktop connected via cable.. went through the
connection wizard.. both computers are saying theyre connected.. But I cant
seem to share the files.. Nothing is showing up in the shared files folder

Im not sure if im just doin it all wrong or not..

I really hope someone can help me (without all the complicated jargon)!

Lea,

I'll try to help you, though I'm not sure about the jargon bit. When you live
in America, you should expect to hear English occasionally (yes just
occasionally, if in LA or Miami for instance). If you're looking for technical
help, in a forum like MPWXNW, expect some jargon. Just ask questions, instead
of ignoring the help.

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall. There are other possibilities too. Read this
article, with an open mind, and for explanations.

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Both browstat and ipconfig are key
diagnostic tools, in file sharing problems, like yours. Read this article, and

Hi Chuck
Thanks for replying to me so quickly!

I've managed to get the shared internet connection working perfectly now..

Just having problems with the file sharing

I've been reading everything Ive came across regarding this or links in
forums and using what I can from them.. its just, all the help in the world
is not much help to someone who doesnt know much about what they're talking
about hehe

Lea - When you ran the Network Wizard to set up,
1. Did you select "File and Printer Sharing"?
2. Have you "marked" the files and folders for sharing?
For example to share "My documents" - Rt. click the
folder>Properties>Sharing tab.
3. You imply you can access the "shared files folder" -
have you moved any files to the folder?

Ive tried this one.. no luck.. all the setting were in place already and
then i closed mcafee to see if it was a firewall prob.. which it wasnt..

I'll try the other one now!

Those look clean.

# Lea appears to be an ICS server, and Desktop an ICS client.

If the Internet service is working, browstat is an important diagnostic tool.
Did you download it yet?

Ive downloaded it.. but when i follow the steps for the command window.. It
says its not recognised

Ive downloaded the a folder c:/browstat and unzipped it.. but im not sure
where im going wrong..

Im so sorry for all this hassle

Don't sweat the hassle. It's how we learn. Which is the purpose of spending
time here.

Try running it as "c:\browstat\browstat status" (less the ""). Or read the
article on using the Path setting.

Yea the host is xp home and the other is pro.. but the pro has the simple
file sharing unticked... what should I do?

I didnt realise this would cause a prob..

The only problem it causes, in this case, is that browstat can't do a registry
access to determine browse master build:
Master browser name is: DESKTOP
Could not open key in registry, error = 5 Unable to determine build of
browser master: 5

That's minor. Don't worry about that.

Now, since you have XP Home on one computer, you may as well keep SFS enabled on
XP Pro. Were you considering using WiFi for your network (wireless convenience
is intense), I'd advise you to upgrade to XP Pro, and disable SFS. SFS, and
forced Guest access, is bad for uncontrolled LANs like WiFi (my professional
opinion). You're on Ethernet though, so that's not as critical.

Im not trying to waste anyone's time.. I've been on these forums literally
all day yesterday, went to bed about 1am and now im back on again at 11am the
following day.. So I can assure you i'm not wasting anyones time on purpose

Im going to have another read through the latest links you posted so
hopefully eventually they'll make a bit of sense to me.. but im not very
hopeful..

Lea,

Yes, all I mean is to read the articles. I know there's a lot of jargon there,
but ask questions about it. This is all stuff that you need to know, if you're
going to fix your problem.

As I said above, my guess is you have a 75% chance, based upon previous
instances of your specific symptoms, of having a misbehaving or misconfigured
personal firewall problem. I can provide you the references, but since I'm not
there with you, you're going to have to use the references yourself.

So read, and ask questions. I'll do my best to answer.
