Can't send signed messages from Windows Mail

A.J. Breimer

Hi,

When sending a signed messages from Windows Mail, an error is popping up,
stating the "The message could not be sent. An error occurred."

There is no further information on the event. Does anyone how to debug this
error (or perhaps repair it)?

You can create a log file under Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance
that might help diagnose the problem.

Steve,

No log is created (probably because no communication with the mail server is
started). A log is created when I send unsigned messages.

Well, that sucks. I would bug this issue. I don't think many use signed
messages, so it would be important that they are informed of such.

Issue solved. The issue arises from using "CGN' keys (which is the default).
When selecting "Legacy key" the signing mechanisme works as expected.

One issue still remains: you can''t select the key for EFS (Vista reports a
non-existing key set.

Hi A.J.
Could you please elaborate on the solution.
I am having the same problem as you originally described but I do not know
where to fix this issue with regards to "cgn keys" and signing mechanism.

Best regards
Patrik

I can't send mail to my wife on this same computer that I sent something to
earlier. The error message states that one or more recipents don't have an
email address please check the address in contact. Well, duh she's my wife
using the same computer as I but a different profile. And yes I made sure
that it was spelled correctly. Can anyone help me here?

Can you post the exact error message? If you do so, it's OK to alter
the username part of the email address for privacy reasons.

So what is the solution for the typical user? How can the Legacy Key be
selected?
Thanks.

Hi,

Try this one:

At the server security option from account section choose the right
certificate for digital signing and encryption.

After that choose at the encryption strenght the RC2 128-bit instead of
default 3 DES.

If it fails, try all these steps on the Vista Windows Mail Options -
Security section.

Kind regards.

Hi A.J. and Patrik,

Me too. I don't see anywhere in Windows Mail to set legacy or cgn keys.
Where did this setting come from?

I noticed this message was from March. Did you ever find the solution to
this problem? I'm trying to send an email to myself from my outlook express
box to my hotmail account and getting the same error message. Thx!

You didn't say what country. This newsgroup goes around the world,
although mostly to English-speaking countries.
