I just set up my new Windows mail account. I can receive mail but I can't
send anything out. I keep getting this message

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject 'Re: ', Account: 'pophm.sympatico.ca', Server:

You should go to the Sympatico help pages, and step carefully through the
directions for Outlook Express - they are pretty much exactly the same as
for Windows Mail. Pay close attention to the part where you have to
authenticate to the sending server, and the SSL checkboxes. You can also
try sending on Port 587 instead of 25.

Also, be sure that your antivirus scanner or firewall is not interfering
with the mail.

Sometimes, though, Sympatico - or Microsoft - seems to be unable to keep
their mail servers running properly. I finally gave up on them, and use
gmail for the sending server. This has the great advantage of allowing me
to send no matter what network I'm connected to.

Your account settings are correct.
That type of problem is usually caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

If no improvement after disabling email scanning, consider upgrading
to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects
from overly intrusive antivirus programs:
