Can't send email from outlook while on the road?

If I am at home, using my own isp, outlook sends email just fine, however,
while I'm on the road using a hotel or similar business's isp and try to send
and email from outlook, I get error messages usually pertaining to "unable to
connect to smtp server"...something to that effect. However I have no
problems receiving email. Outlook is configured to send and receive my email
thru charter.net-my cable isp at home, where it works just fine (not
hotmail). A note...I did some research on the type of error I am getting and
the article I was reading implied that this is actually quite common because
a lot of isp's prevent users from other isp's to send email from their isp to
try and combat spam, identity spoofing, etc. However a friend of mine uses
Thunderbird as his email program, uses it all the time on the road like I do
and never has problems sending email. So I wondering if there is a way to
fix my problem.

Thanks anyone who may be able to help!

Your ISP may not permit off-domain access to their SMTP server (i.e., a
connection request coming from a network other than their own). You'll have
to ask your ISP how they handle off-domain connections for their customers.
Could be you are supposed to authenticate to their mail servers so they
actually know how you are and that you are authorized to use their
resources. Could also be that they require using a non-standard port
number, SSL, or other unusual settings. Again, call your e-mail provider
and ask them since they would best know how their customers can or cannot
connect while travelling. You could also just go read their help web pages
on how to setup your e-mail client for off-domain access to their mail
servers.

First try setting your e-mail account defined in Outlook to authenticate to
your e-mail provider's server. If that doesn't work, and until you tell
*us* what were the error messages that you got, then talk to charter.net.
You are, after all, paying them so use their tech support.

Thanks Vanguard, I have tried setting outlook to authenticate, and that
didn't work either. But you're right, this does seem to be a problem with my
isp and I'm taking it up with them next...

Thanks again...
