Wonder if anybody can help. Like a lot of people I cant send e-mails via
webmail. I can receive e-mails though. The error message I am getting is this

An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Re: Quotes', Account:

Response: '421 aamtaout04-winn.ispmail.ntl.com connection refused from

I'm not very familiar with these ISP's but it looks like you are on Sky and
trying to send thru Ntlworld's servers. And they don't want you to.

G

Gary VanderMolen

Right. And the reason they don't want you to use a 'foreign' SMTP
server is explained here:
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

Graham, if you need workarounds, let us know.

Hi there - I've been searching the net for a while now trying to get the
answer to this very same question. I too now have Sky as my bradband
supplier where it was previously NTL/Virgin. My email address is set up
on NTL and my Dad still has NTL at his house so the account is still
active as this is where I set it up.
I can receive my NTL email through Outlook but can not send any. I've
tried changing the outgoing settings to 'SMTP:Sky' but no luck.
Are there, as has been suggested, any 'workarounds' for this so I can
continue to use my old email address that is registered at every online
shop I use and all of my friends have?

Any help - much appreciated.

Thanks.
If you want help with Outlook, you'll get better answers in some of the
newsgroups for Outlook, such as:

microsoft.public.outlook.general

If you have the same problem in Windows Mail, you often need to
change your outgoing email server to the one used by your internet
provider. You can keep the same return address and the same
incoming email server, and people you are sending mail to aren't
likely to notice the difference.

G

Gary VanderMolen

If you really mean "Outlook" you are in the wrong newsgroup.

Looks like you may have the wrong name for Sky's SMTP server.
Check with Sky for the proper server name. If you continue to
have difficulty, and you are using Windows Mail rather than Outlook,
post back with the complete error message.

Hi again.
Thanks for replying.
I am using Outlook Express to try and send emails. I can receive them
fine. I set my email account up on NTL/Virgin whist living at home but
have now moved out and my broadband supplier is now Sky. I'd like to
still use my NTL email account as that's the one all my contacts know
and the one which is registered on every online shop account I have. My
Dad still has Virgin at home so the account is still active. I can
receive emails fine but can not send. I think it might have something to
do with Sky blocking email from a domain that is not Sky on Port 25? Is
there another port I can use so I can continue to use Sky broadband to
send my NTL email?

Just use the Sky smtp server - it won't affect anything your recipients
see.....

Please post the complete error message when using the Sky SMTP
server (right-click on it, copy, then paste it into a reply).

Similar problem here w/Comcast. As of this AM (Friday) not able to send any
emails via Outlook Express or Windows mail. Three clean computers and none
will send. (Two are XP Pro svc pack 2 and the third is Vista Ultimate w/svc
pack 1, and is a brand new set up. All machines completely up-to-date.) Can
receive on all machines - no problem.

Error msg as follows (which is fairly common and usually an easy fix.):

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test', Account: 'freedom',
Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket
Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Comcast is at a loss and so far have no suggestions. (Tried several of their
"fixes" with techs to no avail.) It appears that port 25 is being blocked but
Comcast says that that's not happening on their end.

I tried changing Port to 587 per researched fixes and also at Comcast's
suggestion. No luck. Absolutely NO software or downloads or hardware changes
of any kind to any of my computers between late last night and this AM's
total failure.

Web mail fine, all broadband access fine, all signal strengths where they
should be. Have depowered modem, router, computers along with other attempts,
but no luck.

Does anyone know if a failed modem could possibly cause this? Based on all
the things I've tried, I am convinced that this is a Comcast or modem issue
and/or something has changed within Comcast's filtering system (they use
Cloudmark) that is causing problems with Microsoft's email apps. But if
that's the case, why are there not massive problems with the vast numbers of
Comcast customers using OE, Windows Mail, and (probably) Outlook? Apparently
this is isolated so it points back to something close to home.

Strange and unsolvable at this point. (Comcast suggested I contact
Microsoft...I guess they want off the hook as quickly and easily as possible.)

G

Gary VanderMolen

At the time you got that error message, was the computer obtaining
its Internet connection from Comcast? Comcast does not allow
off-network connections to its SMTP server.

The other possibility is that some third party security program
is blocking SMTP. The only way to find the culprit is to uninstall
these one at a time to see if it makes a difference.

Does your connection to the Comcast outgoing email server cross over
from one internet provider's equipment to another? If so, many email
providers block such connections to port 25 and I think I've seen a
message saying Comcast blocks them to port 587 also. Does
Comcast offer webmail access to their email servers, which uses
yet another port? If so, try it in such a connection.

The answer to first query is yes. As far as second regarding security, only
Live OneCare, which is definitely not the problem.

I must stress that nothing changed on this end between midnight Thursday
night and 7:00am Friday morning that would stop all three machines from
sending email.

This is bizzarre. It has to be a Comcast issue. Any other ideas?

Solved - more or less. Was checking Broadband Reports board and came across a
similar thread. When I tried changing port to 587 yesterday, I neglected to
check the "My server requires authentication" box on the "servers" tab page.
Interesting reflection on the quality of Comcast support in that when they
directed me to change to the 587 port they neglected to inform me that the
box needed to be checked.

Also, when I asked Comcast CSR supervisor yesterday if port 25 was blocked,
I was put on hold for five minutes while he referenced my account, rechecked
my connection, and referenced his sources. He came back and said that there
was no port 25 block on the account.

Today, I got through to the Comcast Abuse Team in New Jersey who are
infinitely more skilled than local cuistomer service reps and supervisors. I
was told that yes, my port 25 was indeed blocked and that Comcast (and other
industry providors) were in the process of switching all residential users
from 25 to 587. He said that it would soon be a requirement for everyone.
Obviously, sooner has become now for me.

So, all is resolved (except I need to change a bunch of ports on a slew of
email setups on three computers.) No big deal, just wish we could get better
and more knowledgeable help.

The rep at the Abuse Team apologized for the poor info from Comcast's CSR's
and said they know that they have a problem in getting good info to their
customers. He also acknowledged that there have been problems in getting
notification emails out. I was supposed to have been notoified of the port 25
issue, but wasn't. He also said that just one spam report (even if false or
done in error) on a valid account will trigger a block on port 25. One is all
it takes, which is their way of forcing the change to port 587.

Thanks for everyone's help. Hope this helps other readers of these message
boards.

Good to hear the issue has been resolved.
Most ISPs block port 25 outright; Comcast allows a customer to
get one spam complaint before shutting down their port 25.

Your port settings including SSL option for the Sky SMTP server are not correct.

Just use the sending part of Sky's instructions, and ignore
the receiving parts, since you want to continue to receive
from NTL.
