on xp pro, with the "use simple file sharing" unchecked. but I still can
not see the security tab when looking a folder properties. I can see the
sharing tab, but not the security tab. This is very strange since I can see
and access security tab on other windows xp pro machines.

how do I get this xp pro machine to allow me to set security setting on
folders

I tried repair reinstall of windows, didn't help.

thanks

Is the drive formatted with FAT32 or NTFS? It needs to be NTFS in order to
use features like file security.

To convert a volume to NTFS from the command prompt
1.
Open Command Prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to
Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.

2.
In the command prompt window, type: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs

For example, typing convert D: /fs:ntfs would format drive D: with the ntfs
format. You can convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS with this command.

Important Once you convert a drive or partition to NTFS, you cannot simply
convert it back to FAT or FAT32. You will need to reformat the drive or
partition which will erase all data, including programs and personal files,
on the partition.

Hi Jon,

Disable the "NoSecurityTab" policy:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
-and-
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

thanks didn't thank about that, haven't worked on a fat32 xp system in a
long time. this is my old computer that I had to break out because new
laptop is in shop.

the real problem I'm trying to solve is that the profile for this user is
not accessable, so I was trying to take ownership of profile. xp is loading
temp profile. I'm converting to ntfs.

thanks

If it was in fact FAT32, then the problem had nothing to do with security
anyway... taking ownership won't help.

problem resolved when convert to ntfs.

once converted, xp created new profile with same name with .000 appended.
so I can move what ever I need to new profile.

thanks
