Can't see computers in workgroup

B

Bill Lampman

I'm trying to install file and printer sharing between XP Pro and XP Home
machines.
Both are in the same workgroup. Both are setup to allow file and printer
sharing.

When I try to "Add a new network place" I can see the workgroup from both
machines, but I can't see any computers in the workgroup. Even the local
machine
can't see itself.in the workgroup - error:

Workgroup is inaccesible. You might not have permission...blah, blah.

What am I doing wrong ?

Bill,

The most likely cause of this problem is a misconfigured firewall.

If not a firewall problem, check for a browser problem.

Drop to command line on both computers, and type ipconfig
this will give you the IP's for both pc's.
Try using the ping command to ping pc #2 from pc #1, and vice-versa.
This will tell you if they are talkting across the network or not. If
you dont get all 4 ping replies, then you most likely have a
mis-configured firewall, or a hardware problem (bad cable, NIC etc)
Are you using a router or a hub or ICS or an AP?

Both have IP addresses generated from a wireless cable modem/gateway. The
desktop
is physically connected, the laptop wireless. I have not tried to ping each
other, which also
entails allowing ICMP requests on both machines, which I also haven't done.
