Can't right click edit batch file in XP Home edition

I've gotten a new laptop with XP home installed. I work with
batch files, and when I right click on a batch file and click
"edit", xp gives an error saying it can't find the file. I can
rename the file with a .txt extension and open it with notepad,
but but no right click editing when it has a .bat extention. My
main machine has XP pro and I don't have this problem. What is
the deal with xp home concerning this? Thanks for any fix!.

Just as a followup, the registry patch didn't fix the problem.
I've tried two other registry patches from batch file guru types
and they didn't work either. I've looked at the registry settings
on my XP pro machine and they seem to be the same as the ones on
the XP home machine. The error popup says to go to start > find
to find the batch file, yada, yada, yada.... The search function
can find the batch file with out problem. I hate to have to blow
out the drive and do a complete restore from the restore disk,
especially if this is a bug in XP home itself. Does anybody else
with XP home have this problem? Thanks for any info!

Problem solved! I think the notepad.exe in the system32 folder
had been deleted after it was modified by a virus. I still had a
copy in the windows folder, so I moved a copy to the system32
folder and all is well! I've got a bad habit of moving copies
notepad.exe around to make it easy to save files, but at least I
had a ready backup copy. Thanks for the info.

Notepad.exe has to be in both folders. For some reason the edit
association uses the one in System32; the link in the All Programs -
Accessories the one in Windows

The below got me on the trail of the missing notepad.exe in the
system32 folder. The error message saying windows couldn't find
the test.bat file instead of not being able to find the
notepad.exe in the system32 folder had me looking for other
problems. The dual notepad locations is interesting and I
wouldn't have picked up on that. Thanks!
