now something happened when I was playing with the settings to try to get it
to work and a log in for dial up keeps popping up now. I don't have anything
in the dial up area. I have never dial a connection clicked. under LAN
settings there is nothing checked. I am using McAfee. see above message for
original error message, and that is the complete error message. PLease help
me, now I can't receive either due to this dial up thing!

Wrong port number. That server uses port 80 for SMTP instead of 25.

Don't ever turn off the Windows Firewall. Also, the only function of your
antivirus that needs turning off is any involvement with email.

If after correcting the port number you get a different error message,
you may need to uninstall your antivirus. More about that in my next
response.

Go to Tools, Accounts, select your mail account, Properties, Connection.
What does it show for connection?
You must either leave that box unselected (in which case WM will use
whatever connection IE uses), or else select the Local Area Network.

Also, under Tools, Options, Connection, the first box should be checked,
and the second box unchecked.

McAfee antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Sometimes it takes a while before symptoms start showing up.
First of all, turn off email scanning in McAfee, although that is seldom sufficient.

If the problem continues, the only way you can prove or disprove that
McAfee is the culprit is to uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=1033

If you decide to replace McAfee, we can recommend a free antivirus
program which is more compatible with Windows Mail:

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of overly intrusive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus,
for the reason explained here:

That's no excuse for using McAfee, IMHO.

See the above reply, also I have McAfee through my Comcast cable modem.
Also,
now I am getting a request when I try to send mail to connect to the
internet via dial up and I don't use dial up.

Thank you Gary. I followed all your advice and it's working correctly, even
with McAfee.

Zack, do you get an error message when you try to send? If so,
right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

Make sure you have send authentication enabled.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Servers.
The box for "My server requires authentication" must be checked.

Michael, if you would like some custom help, simply post the details
of your problem, and include a copy of any error messages.
